Woodlawn United

Bringing a community together to end the cycle of poverty + give back to the place they call home.

Woodlawn United, previously known as Woodlawn Foundation, is a nonprofit devoted to serving the Woodlawn Community. The vision of Woodlawn United is to grow a safe and healthy community. One where children learn and play, families live in quality housing, parents work in stable jobs, businesses thrive and everyone contributes to the growth of Greater Birmingham. This was an unused concept presented to the client.

Who is Woodlawn?

Woodlawn is a historic neighborhood east of downtown Birmingham, AL. Once a prosperous community, the social turmoil of the 1960s and economic turmoil of the 1970s, along with the construction of interstates 20 and 59, caused the community to succumb to the familiar patterns of urban neglect. Woodlawn continued to stand thanks to faithful and passionate residents. These residents helped revitalize Woodlawn and inspire others to join the effort. Woodlawn is about 70% African American. So, Black culture wasn't just something we needed to incorporate in our solution. It is something that we needed to highlight.

Pulling from the culture of the community.

Woodlawn residents are personal, tight-knit, and vibrant. Handwritten words and textures work to reflect the intimate relationships between business owners and the community. One of Woodlawn's defining features is the Woodlawn Street Market, a Saturday morning collection of vendors from the community. To create a brand that is uniquely Woodlawn, we pulled our color palette from Black market vendor and jewelry designer, Exalting in Beauty.
